What is the Tanoura dance at a Dubai desert camp?

Tanoura is a spinning folk dance performed in a heavy, brightly lit skirt. The performer turns continuously for several minutes without stopping, lifting and rotating sections of the skirt as they go. It is the centrepiece of the camp entertainment and it is included on every evening safari we run, from AED 80.

The short version. Included free. Performed after dark at the camp. Several minutes of continuous spinning in a lit skirt. Alongside it you get a fire show and a belly dance performance.

Where the dance comes from

Tanoura takes its name from the Arabic word for skirt. It has roots in Egyptian folk performance and shares its spinning form with Sufi whirling traditions found across the region.

What you see at a Dubai desert camp is the performance version rather than a religious ceremony: the same continuous rotation, staged with weighted, illuminated skirts that hold their shape as the performer turns.

The skill is in never stopping. The performer spins in one direction for the whole piece while manipulating the skirt with both hands, sometimes lifting a full layer clear over their head.

When it happens

After dark, once dinner service is under way at the camp. The lit skirts only work properly in darkness, which is why it is not part of the morning safari.

Performances run on a rotating schedule through the evening rather than all at once, so you are not choosing between eating and watching. If you miss the start, there is usually another act following.

On the evening safari, collection is at around 2:00 PM and return around 9:30 PM, with the entertainment sitting in the middle of the camp portion.

The rest of the entertainment

Fire show. Fire poi and staff work, performed in full darkness.

Belly dance. Traditional performance at the main stage area.

Filming it properly

This is low light and fast movement, which is the hardest combination for a phone.

• Turn the flash off. It lights nothing past two metres and destroys the effect of the lit skirt.
• Shoot video, not stills. Stills of a spinning subject in low light will be blurred.
• Steady the phone on a table edge or against something solid.
• Get a seat near the front if it matters to you. On the VIP safari at AED 120 seating is reserved rather than first come.

With children

Tanoura is the act that holds children’s attention best, because there is always something moving and the skirt lights up. It is not loud and there is nothing frightening in it.

The fire show is the one to think about with very young children, since it involves open flame. It is performed at a distance from seating, but if your child is nervous around fire, sit further back.

Etiquette

Filming from your seat is fine and expected. Ask before photographing performers close up, and do not step into the performance area for a photograph.

Applause at the end is normal. Tipping performers is optional and never expected.

During Ramadan

Can I try it? No, it is a performance. The Arabic dress station is where guests get their own photographs.

Is it on the morning safari? No. The morning tour finishes before midday, well before the entertainment starts.

How does the performer not get dizzy? Training. They spin in a single direction and fix on a point, and it takes years to build up.
