Why the evening safari starts at 2:00 PM

The 2:00 PM pickup is not arbitrary. It is set so that the drive out to Al Awir, the tyre pressure stop and the dune bashing session all finish while the sun is still high enough to light the dunes, leaving you standing in open desert at the exact point the light turns. Leave an hour later and you arrive at the camp in the dark, having missed the part of the trip most people came to photograph. Leave an hour earlier and you are sitting in the camp waiting for the evening programme to begin.

That timing also sets the length of the tour. Pickup around 2:00 PM and a return around 9:30 PM makes this a six to seven hour commitment door to door, which effectively takes your whole afternoon and evening. If you have dinner reservations or a flight the same night, this is not the tour to book. The morning safari exists precisely for that situation.

What the camp evening actually involves

Where the evening safari differs most from every other format is what happens after the driving stops. Once the vehicles reach camp you are there for several hours, not passing through. That time is filled with the seated entertainment programme, the henna and Arabic dress stations, the shisha lounge and the BBQ buffet, which is served with both vegetarian and non vegetarian options.

This is the reason the evening tour is the one most first time visitors should book. Every other safari we run either removes the camp evening entirely, as the morning tour does, or changes how you experience it rather than what it contains. The VIP safari runs this identical evening with reserved seating and shorter waits. The overnight safari runs this identical evening and then keeps you at the camp until sunrise.

Best months for the evening format

October to April is when this tour is at its best. Sunset falls earlier, so the dune session and the photography stop land at a comfortable hour, and the camp evening is genuinely pleasant to sit through rather than something to endure. In December and January the desert cools quickly after dark, so bring a jacket even if the afternoon was warm.

Between May and September the evening tour still runs, but the afternoon pickup means the first part of the drive happens in the hottest part of the day. In those months most guests are better served by the morning safari, or by booking the private safari so the timing can be shifted later.
