When is the best month for a desert safari in Dubai?

November to March is the best window, and October to April is the wider comfortable season. Those months give you pleasant afternoons, cool but manageable camp evenings, and the light that makes the Al Awir dunes photograph the way people expect.

The short version. Best: November to March. Good: October and April. Workable with the right tour: May to September, but book the morning safari. Coldest camp nights: December and January, bring a jacket.

Month by month

October. The season opens. Afternoons are still warm but the camp evening becomes comfortable. Good value before the peak weeks arrive.

November to February. The best months. Comfortable afternoons, clear light, and the evening safari at its best. These are also the busiest weeks, particularly around Christmas and New Year, so book ahead.

March. Still excellent. Warming up but not yet uncomfortable, and quieter than the winter peak.

April. The end of the comfortable season. Afternoons get hot towards the end of the month. Evening safaris still work well.

May to September. Hot. Safaris run throughout, but the middle of the day in open desert is hard work. The morning tour becomes the sensible booking, and evening tours start later in the day.

The thing nobody warns you about: winter nights

Daytime temperature tells you very little about desert night temperature. Between December and February the desert cools sharply once the sun goes down, and the camp is open to the sky.

Guests arrive in the afternoon warmth, pack nothing warm, and spend the camp evening cold. Bring a jacket. If you are booking the overnight safari in those months, bring proper layers, because you are sleeping outdoors.

Between May and September the opposite applies and nights stay warm, which is one genuine advantage of a summer overnight stay.

If you can only come in summer

Book the morning safari. It collects between 7:00 and 8:00 AM and returns between 11:00 AM and midday, finishing before the heat peaks.

There is a second reason it works better in summer that has nothing to do with comfort. Desert surface temperature rises through the morning, and by late morning the air above the sand distorts, which flattens photographs and makes sandboarding unpleasant. Starting at first light avoids both.

The morning tour does not include the camp dinner or the evening entertainment, because it finishes before they start. If those are what you want, take the evening safari and accept a warmer afternoon drive.

Busiest and quietest times

Busiest: Christmas and New Year weeks, February half term, and Dubai’s weekends, which fall on Saturday and Sunday.

Quietest: midweek in October, March and April, and most of the summer.

If you want the dunes without other vehicles in your photographs, a midweek morning safari outside the winter peak is as quiet as it gets.

Ramadan

Safaris operate during Ramadan, but entertainment schedules and food service can differ, and timings shift. If you are travelling during Ramadan, message us before booking and we will tell you exactly what is running rather than you finding out on the day.

Which tour suits which season

• November to March — evening safari, AED 80. The full camp evening at its most comfortable.
• May to September — morning safari, AED 100. Done before the heat.
• December to February, if you want the desert at night — overnight safari, AED 500. Cold, but the clearest skies.
• Any month, with children or older relatives — private safari, AED 500 per car, so timing and pace are yours.

Common questions

Is it too hot in July and August? For an afternoon tour it is hard work. The morning safari is genuinely fine.

Does it rain? Rarely, and mostly in winter. Occasional rain can affect dune conditions, and we will tell you if a tour is affected.

Are prices higher in peak season? Rates are subject to availability and can vary around public holidays and peak weeks. We confirm your total before you pay.

How far ahead should I book? Peak winter weeks fill up. Outside those, a few days is usually enough and same day is often possible.

Which month has the best photographs? November to February, for the light. Morning tours in any month for empty dunes.
