What is a Dubai desert safari like in winter?
Winter is the best time to do it, and the one thing to get right is bringing a jacket. Between November and March the afternoons are comfortable and the light is at its best, but once the sun drops the desert cools sharply and the camp is open to the sky.
The short version. Best season for the evening safari at AED 80. Comfortable afternoons, clear light, pleasant camp evenings. December and January nights get genuinely cold. Busiest weeks of the year, so book ahead.
Why winter suits the evening safari best
The evening tour collects at around 2:00 PM and returns around 9:30 PM. In summer that means the drive out happens in the hottest part of the day. In winter it means a comfortable afternoon and a camp evening you can actually enjoy sitting through rather than endure.
Sunset also falls earlier, so the dune session and the photography stop land at a civilised hour instead of pushing the whole evening later.
The light through winter afternoons is the other reason. Lower sun angle, less haze, and the red sand at Al Awir photographs the way people expect it to look.
The cold catches almost everyone out
This is the single most common winter complaint, and it is entirely avoidable.
You land in comfortable daytime temperatures, spend the afternoon in light clothing, and assume the evening will be mild. It will not be. Desert nights in December and January drop far below the daytime figure, and there is no shelter or heating at an open camp.
Bring a jacket. A hoodie or light fleece is enough for the evening tour. If you are booking the overnight safari between December and February, bring proper layers, because you are sleeping outdoors.
Guests who bring one warm layer have a good evening. Guests who do not spend it wishing they had.
Winter is the busy season
Christmas week, New Year and February half term are the busiest periods of the year for Dubai safaris. That has three practical effects.
Book ahead. Same day availability is much tighter in peak weeks than it is in October or March.
Expect a busier camp. More guests, longer buffet queues, more vehicles at the dune area. The VIP safari at AED 120 exists partly for this, with reserved seating and shorter waits.
Consider midweek. Dubai’s weekend is Saturday and Sunday, so a Tuesday or Wednesday in winter is noticeably quieter than a Saturday.
Quieter winter alternatives
If you want winter conditions without winter crowds, two options work well.
The morning safari at AED 100 collects between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. Winter mornings are cool and the dunes are close to empty. Bring a layer for the early start. It does not include the camp dinner or the evening shows.
October, March and April sit at the edges of the season. Nearly all of the comfort, considerably fewer people.
What winter does not change
The tour itself. Same camp in Al Awir, same dune bashing, same camel ride, sandboarding, sunset photography stop, BBQ buffet with vegetarian and non vegetarian options, and the same live entertainment programme.
Age rules are unchanged too: dune bashing recommended from age 7 upward, younger children can join without it.
Winter packing additions
- A jacket or fleece. The one item that matters.
- Long trousers rather than shorts for the evening tour.
- Socks with your closed shoes. Sand is cold at night.
- A scarf, useful for both wind at the dunes and warmth at camp.
Sunscreen and sunglasses are still worth bringing. Winter sun in open desert is weaker but not weak.

How cold does it actually get? Cold enough that a jacket is the difference between a good evening and an uncomfortable one. It varies night to night.
Does it rain in winter? Occasionally. Rain can affect dune conditions and sandboarding. We will tell you if a tour is affected.
Is the camp heated? No, it is open air. There is a fire, and the food and drinks are hot.

Is overnight camping too cold in winter? It is the coldest option in the coldest months. With proper layers it is fine, and the night skies are at their clearest.
