Morning or evening desert safari: which should you book?

Book the evening safari if it is your first time and you want the full experience, including dinner and the camp entertainment. Book the morning safari if you are short on time, travelling in summer, or have young children. Those two sentences answer it for most people.

The short version. Evening: AED 80, around 2:00 PM to 9:30 PM, includes BBQ dinner and live shows. Morning: AED 100, 7:00 to 8:00 AM out and back before midday, no dinner and no shows. Both include the same dune bashing, camel ride and sandboarding at our Al Awir camp.

Why the shorter tour costs more

This surprises people, and it is worth explaining rather than leaving it to look like a mistake.

The evening safari is the format every operator in Dubai runs at volume. High occupancy across many vehicles brings the per seat cost down, which is why AED 80 buys the longest tour with the most inclusions.

The morning safari runs with fewer guests at a quieter time. You are paying for the timing and the space, not for extra activities. It is the right call when your schedule or the weather makes the evening impractical, and the wrong call if you are choosing purely on what is included.

Book the evening safari if

• It is your first desert safari. The camp evening is what most people picture when they imagine one.
• You want dinner included. BBQ buffet with vegetarian and non vegetarian options.
• You want the sunset photographs. The tour is timed so the dune session finishes as the light turns.
• You are travelling October to April. The camp evening is genuinely pleasant in those months.
• You want the best value. Cheapest per person, most included.

Book the morning safari if

• You are on a tight schedule. Back before midday with the rest of the day free.
• You are visiting May to September. It finishes before the peak heat.
• You have a flight that evening. The evening safari returns around 9:30 PM, which is tight with packing.
• You are travelling with young children. Three to four hours is far easier on small children than seven.
• You want photographs without other vehicles. The dunes are close to empty in the morning.

What both tours have in common

Both run to the same camp in the Al Awir desert east of the city, the closest of the main safari areas to old Dubai. Both include return hotel pickup from Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman at no extra charge. Both include the dune bashing session with licensed drivers, a photography stop, the camel ride and sandboarding.

Age rules are identical: dune bashing is recommended from age 7 upward, younger children can join without it, and under 3s must be seated with a guardian during transfers.

The options in between

If neither quite fits, two other formats are worth knowing about.

The VIP evening safari at AED 120 runs the identical evening with reserved camp seating and shorter waits for food and shows. Worth it if you dislike queuing more than you dislike paying AED 40.

The private safari at AED 500 per car can be run in either slot. It is the answer when your group has mixed requirements, because the dune intensity is adjustable and the pace is yours. For groups of five or more it usually costs the same or less than seats. Full working in the group size guide.

Common questions

Can I do both? Yes, on separate days. Some guests take the morning safari early in their trip and the evening one later.

Is breakfast included on the morning safari? No. Complimentary bottled water is provided.

Is the dune bashing the same on both? Yes, the same session at the same dunes.

Which is better for photographs? Morning for empty dunes and clean light. Evening for sunset colour and the camp.

Which is better in December? Evening, comfortably. Bring a jacket, because the desert cools sharply after dark.
