Is a desert safari safe during pregnancy?

The honest answer is that dune bashing is not recommended during pregnancy, but the rest of a Dubai desert safari is generally fine. You do not have to choose between doing the whole thing and missing out entirely, and the way to have the camp evening without the dune driving is straightforward.

The short version. Skip the dune bashing. Keep the camel ride, the sunset stop, the camp, the BBQ dinner and the entertainment. Book the private safari at AED 500 per car so the dune session can be removed rather than endured. Speak to your doctor first.

Why dune bashing specifically is the problem

Dune bashing is a 4×4 driving session across soft sand, with climbs, descents and sideways movement. It involves sudden changes of direction and repeated jolting. Our drivers are licensed and the routes are controlled, but the motion itself is what makes it unsuitable, not the safety of the driving.

That is why the same advice applies to guests with back, neck or heart conditions, and to anyone prone to motion sickness. It is a general caution about the activity, not a judgement about you.

This is guidance from an operator, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, ask your doctor or midwife before booking any activity in Dubai, and follow what they tell you over what any tour company says.

What you can still do on the safari

Removing the dune session leaves most of the experience intact.

• The sunset photography stop in open desert, which is the part most people remember
• The camel ride, a short guided ride at the dune area
• The camp evening, with seated entertainment, henna painting, Arabic dress photography and the shisha lounge
• The BBQ buffet dinner, with vegetarian and non vegetarian options
• Live performances, including Tanoura and fire shows

What you lose is roughly twenty to thirty minutes of driving. What you keep is the entire reason most people book.

How to arrange it properly

There are two ways, and they are not equally good.

On a shared tour, you can wait at the dune stop while the vehicle runs its session, then rejoin for the drive to camp. It works, but it means standing in the desert while your group is away, and usually a companion waits with you.

On a private safari, the driver simply does not do it. The vehicle takes a gentler route straight to the camp. Nobody waits anywhere, nobody in your group has to sit out to keep you company, and the pace is yours throughout.

At AED 500 for the whole car, up to six guests, this is the booking we recommend to every pregnant guest who asks. A couple pays AED 250 each. A group of four pays AED 125 each.

Which tour format is most comfortable

The morning safari is the shortest at three to four hours, collecting between 7:00 and 8:00 AM and returning before midday. Cooler, quieter, and less time on your feet. It does not include the camp dinner or evening shows.

The evening safari runs from around 2:00 PM to around 9:30 PM. Longer, but the camp portion is mostly seated, and it is the format with the dinner and entertainment.

We would not recommend the overnight safari during pregnancy. Sleeping arrangements at camp are basic desert camping with shared facilities, not a hotel, and that is a lot to ask of anyone who needs comfort or easy access to a bathroom at night.

Practical points worth knowing

• Tell us when you book, not on the day. It lets us brief the driver in advance rather than rearranging at the dune stop.
• Bring water beyond what is provided. Unlimited water is available at camp, but the transfer is a stretch without it.
• October to April is the comfortable season. In summer, take the morning tour if you go at all.
• Winter nights get genuinely cold in the desert. Bring a jacket for evening tours between December and February.
• The camp is on sand. Flat, stable shoes rather than anything with a heel.

Common questions

Can I ride the camel while pregnant? Ask your doctor. It is a short, slow, guided ride, but it is still an animal and you are up high. Many guests skip it and stay for the photographs.

Is there a stage of pregnancy where it is fine? That is a question for your doctor, not for us. Our position is the same regardless of stage: no dune bashing.

Will I be charged less for skipping activities? No, the tour price is the same. But the private car rate is flat, so a group booking privately often pays less per person anyway.

Can my partner still do the dune bashing? On a shared tour, yes, while you wait at the dune stop. On a private tour the vehicle is yours, so the session either happens for everyone or not at all.
